Mohawk School

Posted on: February 7, 2012

[ACTIVE] Johnson School Construction Update - January

When will the new additions be done?
Both additions are expected to be ready for teachers and staff to move in over the summer and for students to start school in August 2012. Some common areas may still need finishing and renovation of existing Johnson will continue in the fall.

Will there be boundary changes?
After analyzing enrollment data, it appears there will be no need for any major boundary changes. To equalize enrollment, some students currently attending Tioga and Chippewa schools will move to the Johnson School in August 2012. Generally, students involved in changing schools are those who are attending Tioga and Chippewa because there was not enough space at their home school of Johnson or Mohawk when they enrolled in the District. There will also be consideration given to 4th and 5th graders whose parents want them to stay with the same students before moving to middle school.

When will Chippewa School move?
Chippewa School will move into Tioga for the start of school in August 2012.

When will Mohawk school move?
The renovation of the existing building at Johnson needs to be complete before there is enough room for all the students at Mohawk. Renovation begins as soon as school is out in May 2012, and will take a minimum of four months.
Mohawk students and staff will have to move to the new Johnson School sometime before the holidays. We plan to operate the 2012-13 school year as two schools within one school and use the time to plan activities to bring students and parents together into one community.

Why does Mohawk have to move mid-year?
After school starts we will have a better idea of when Johnson will be ready for Mohawk. While moving in the middle of the semester or school year is not ideal, we believe it is the right choice because:
o We will have wonderful new buildings that we will want students to move into as soon as they are ready.
o Mohawk boilers barely making it through this winter.
o This will allow for a full transition year. There are multiple activities being this year and continuing next year for families to get to know each other and to get to know the District 2 staff.

Will there be two principals at each school?
Yes. Jennifer Ban will oversee Kindergarten through 2nd grade and Madelyn Devers will oversee 3rd through 5th grade starting in the 2013-14 school year. However, both principals will oversee school operations and be able to respond to parent inquiries. A similar protocol will be established at Tioga.

Will class sizes be bigger?
Class sizes will remain consistent with current guidelines. There will be approximately five classes of each grade at each school, which will allow for more equalized enrollment.
