PBIS General Information
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is a framework from which good behavior is systematically described and taught through expectations and rewarded when observed by students. An example is a teacher complementing a student who is walking quietly in the hall instead of verbally quieting other students.
Expectations & Rewards
Students accumulate points in some form that qualify them for special events or small prizes. The expectations are taught to children and all staff members. From bus drivers and lunchroom helpers to teachers, all follow the same set. There are expectations for common areas such as hallways, bathrooms, and cafeterias as well as classrooms or other smaller environments. The PBIS team in each school evaluates discipline referrals to determine where their lessons – cool tools – should be focused.
Developing a positive school environment helps teachers teach and students learn. The state also developed social and emotional learning standards that all schools must follow. PBIS meets the criteria for delivering these standards to students.
PBIS's Relationship to Other Behavioral Interventions & Supports
School-wide positive behavior support is not considered a new initiative. Instead it is a set of problem-solving strategies and processes that can be used to build upon a school’s existing strengths. PBIS uses data to analyze behavior and target problem areas.
