Church Road Reconstruction
Daytime detours will impact access to Blackhawk, EAC
Church Road Detour 2.jpg

Reconstruction of Church Road in front of Blackhawk Middle School began on Monday, April 24. On Monday, May 1, traffic on Church Road between Grove Avenue and Jefferson Street will be reduced to a single southbound lane. It will remain open to local southbound traffic only throughout construction, which is slated for completion in mid November 2017.

BSD2 families and staff will still be able to use Church Road to access Blackhawk Middle School and the BSD2 Educational Administration Center (EAC) during construction. They should, though, anticipate temporary delays and detours when doing so.

The Village of Bensenville’s recommended detour route is detailed in the map to the right. (Click here to enlarge.)

However, during the day, small portions of this stretch of Church Road will be closed to all through traffic, and local southbound traffic will be briefly rerouted east a block or two around these closed areas. These sorts of small detours will start at the north and south ends of the project, and gradually move toward the center as the project progresses. They will be publicized by the Village and the District prior to taking effect.

The first of these closed areas will be between Grove Avenue and Wood Street at the north end of the project, and between Washington and Jefferson Streets at the south end. On the north end, traffic will be rerouted to Judson Street, and on the south end, it will be rerouted to Ellis Street. These detours will likely be in place through the end of the school year.

Additionally …

  • Sidewalks in the area are tentatively slated for removal beginning June 28. In their temporary absence, the Village is advising that the safest option for pedestrians who must access Blackhawk and the EAC will be to do so by walking through the front yards of residents. Active work zones will have construction personnel to assist pedestrians to safe walking areas. Inactive excavations required to be left open will be properly protected.

  • Access to different driveways and parking lots at Blackhawk and the EAC will also be impacted at different times throughout this project. However, the Village’s staging of the project will always allow access to both sites.

Throughout this project, District 2 will work closely with the Village of Bensenville to provide the BSD2 community with construction updates. That information will be posted to this page, and shared via the District’s School Messenger phone and text message system, its 2Talk District News and Alerts subscription e-mail service, and its Facebook and Twitter accounts.

When finished, this Village-funded project will provide many infrastructure improvements, including an off-street, 8-foot-wide, shared-use path in front of Blackhawk Middle School that will accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.
