Bensenville School District 2 is offering several exciting learning opportunities for third- through seventh-grade students this summer. Check them out below.

  • SUMMER SCHOOL: Offered June 12-30 at Tioga School, this program focuses on reading, writing and math, and provides an opportunity for students to focus in on areas in which they need improvement.

  • JUMPSTART: Offered June 19-30 at Blackhawk Middle School, this program provides incoming sixth graders with opportunities to meet some of their teachers and learn more about their new school. Teachers will help prepare them for success by exposing them to basic middle school routines, such as locker combinations, lunchroom procedures, and following schedules. They will also be introduced to the sixth-grade math and English/language arts curriculums.

  • STEM/ENRICHMENT: Offered throughout June at Tioga School, these exciting, weeklong programs engage third- through seventh-grade students in fun, hands-on learning activities that allow them to explore various aspects of science, technology, engineering and math through collaboration, creation, design, and programming.

Students learned how to program a LEGO Mindstorms robot this week during District 2's third- and fourth-grade STEM Enrichment summer program.

?Newcomers in District 2’s English Language Learners (ELL) program are still receiving instruction this summer thanks in part to two generous grants from the Bensenville Youth Services Coalition and the Bensenville Community Foundation.
Each organization donated $300 to help fund the summer session, which is being taught at Bensenville Community Public Library by Nancy Donohue, a bilingual teacher at Blackhawk Middle School who uses both languages—English and Spanigh—to help students make connections with new words and ideas.
Newcomers are students who recently arrived in District 2 from another country knowing little to no English. Ms. Donohue works with these students throughout the normal school year, and she organized this three-week summer session so her students could continue learning the language over the summer break.
So far, the students have studied weather vocabulary, research penguins in English, and hand sewn their own pinguinos to use in an iMovie that they are writing, directing, and producing.
Thank you, Bensenville Youth Services Coalition, Bensenville Community Foundation, and Bensenville Community Public Library for partnering with District 2 to serve this special group of students.
