CHECK YOUR MAILBOXES & BACKPACKS: First-trimester report cards were sent home Monday, November 27
Friday, November 10, is the end of the first trimester. On Monday, November 27, first-trimester report cards will be sent home with elementary students, and mailed to middle school students' homes.

MAKING THE GRADE: The 2023 Illinois Report Cards are available online for BSD2 schools
Both Tioga and W.A. Johnson Schools maintained “Commendable” designations this year. While Blackhawk Middle School’s cumulative score also ranked well within the “Commendable” range, it received a “Targeted” designation indicating a need to increase support for our English Learners (EL) subgroup.

FREE DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING: Nobody knows your child better than you
Bensenville School District 2 will conduct free developmental screenings for children ages 3-5 on Friday December 1. These screenings are the first step in identifying children for our Preschool for All program and/or Head Start. Call the Tioga School office at 630-766-2602 ext. 4200 to schedule an appointment for your child’s screening.

WINTER WEATHER UPDATE: eLearning Days have replaced emergency ‘snow days’
District 2 now calls eLearning Days when closing schools due to extreme weather. An eLearning Day counts as a regular school day, and does not require the District to use a built-in emergency day at the end of the school year.

GOOD AS GOLD: BSD2 Early Childhood Program meets state’s highest goals for quality.
The Illinois State Board of Education recently recognized Bensenville School District 2’s Pre-Kindergarten Program with the “Gold Circle of Quality, which is the highest rating a program can earn.”

DOLLARS & SENSE: District 2 Board of Education approves 2023-2024 budget
The budget projects a small surplus, with expenditures and revenues roughly balancing at $46.3 million.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Meals are now free for ALL BSD2 students!
The Illinois State Board of Education and the District 2 school board both approved the District’s participation in a different meals program - the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). In CEP, students will only need to present their ID cards in their school’s meal lines to receive a free meal.

As we begin another new school year, I am excited to see what we will accomplish together. I am confident we will continue to make great strides in improving student outcomes and creating positive learning environments for all. END-OF-YEAR HONORS: District 2 recognizes employee achievements in return of its annual celebration of teachers and staff
District 2 capped off Teacher Appreciation Week with the return of its annual end-of-the-year celebration and recognition of teachers and staff, which was held Wednesday, May 10, at White Pines Golf Club. Shelved for the past three years due to COVID, the annual ceremony recognizes employees who are retiring or celebrating milestone anniversaries with the District, and teachers who recently earned tenure with the District.

Voters elected two newcomers and three incumbents to the Bensenville School District 2 Board of Education during the April 4 election.

WELCOME TO DISTRICT 2: Meet a new member of the District's Community Relations team
Meet Gabriela Escobar, our new Bilingual Community Relations Assistant. Gaby is teaming up with Tim Waldorf, our Community Relations Coordinator, to improve our connection with our families that speak languages other than English. Together, they will be working to ensure that our communications are linguistically sound and culturally aware.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT: Introducing Right At School, our new elementary after-school program provider
We are excited to announce that the nationally recognized after school student enrichment program provider Right at School is coming to District 2! Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, Right At School will run the district’s after school programming for Johnson and Tioga schools.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION: District 2 teacher honored in the 2023 ISBE Those Who Excel awards program
Carla Vazquez, a dual language first-grade teacher at W.A. Johnson School, received “Special Recognition” in the Illinois State Board of Education’s “Those Who Excel”” awards program on February 3.

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS: New policy addresses student absences related to mental and behavioral health
Parents/guardians may keep a student from school for up to five mental health absences with no need to provide a medical note.

NEW TEACHERS CONTRACT: Five-year agreement increases compensation while fitting within the budget
The Bensenville School District 2 Board of Education has approved a five-year contract with the Bensenville Education Association (BEA), the union representing the District’s 200-plus teachers. By fitting within the District’s budget, the new contract honors the interests of taxpayers while increasing teachers’ compensation to a more competitive level.
