Remote Learning FAQ (English)

    On March 31, 2020, Governor Pritzker announced that, moving forward, school days will now be deemed Remote Learning Days, not Act of God days. This means teaching and learning will continue for our students, at home, through our Remote Learning Program (formerly called E-Learning).  We have amended the E-Learning Parent FAQ document to align with the new Remote Learning process.

  • 1. How will students and parents be notified that Remote Learning is being implemented?

    Students and parents will be notified through the district website, daily phone messages, emails, text messages, and social media.

  • 2. How is attendance recorded?

    • Grades Pre-K-2:
      • If a student is sick, parents call in to the school’s office by 9 a.m., just like a regular school day.
    • Grades 3-5:
      • Students must log in to their Remote Learning Google Classroom each day by 9 a.m. and submit the Attendance Google Document to their teachers to be marked “in attendance.” If a student is sick, parents must call the school’s office by 9 a.m., just like a regular school day.
    • Grades 6–8:
      • Students are to click the “Daily Attendance” link once they enter Google Classroom at the start of their work for the day. Students are asked to click this link by 9 a.m. each morning of Remote learning.

  • 3. How will my child access the Remote Learning lessons?

    • Grades Pre-K -2: Teachers provide lesson activities to parents/guardians through apps that have already been in place; students and parents/guardians share student accomplishments through these apps as well. (Beginning on Tuesday, April 14, lessons will also be posted on the District and school websites.)

    • Grades 3-8: Students access lessons through their Google Classroom:

      • Go to the District website, bsd2.org then…
      • Click on the Teaching and Learning tab at the top, then…
      • Click on the Remote Learning Lessons link
      • On the Remote Learning Lessons webpages, students will locate and click the link to their teacher’s Google Classroom. (Click here for lllustrated directions.
      • Students MUST submit their Attendance Form to their teacher by 9 a.m. each day.
      • On Mondays or the first day of each week, teachers will post lessons for the entire week by 8:30 a.m. However, lessons will continue to be organized by each day of the week. Some lessons will have a specific due date for that week. Please encourage your child to submit some lessons each day and all along the way so teachers can provide timely feedback and support.

        • Grades Pre-K-2: Students, parents/guardians submit student work through the grade level Apps listed on Page 1.
        • Grades 3-8: Students submit their work through their Google Classroom.

      • Students and parents experiencing technical difficulties with these lessons will be able to contact the help desk at their school between the hours of 8:30 and 3:20. Grade-level and department contact information can be found using the subsequent links:

  • 4. How will I verify that the learning assignments are complete?

    Grades Pre-K-2:

    • Parents may ask their child to tell them about the assignments completed.  If desired, parents can also communicate with their child’s teacher(s) via their grade level App to share the learning their child is acquiring.

      • Tioga:

      • WAJ:
        • Grads K-1:  Bloomz
        • Grade 2:  RemindMe

    Grades 3-8:

    • Parents may ask their child to share the assignments completed before submitting by 9 p.m. 

    • Beginning on Friday, April 24, parents may verify that the learning activities are complete by reviewing automated Google Classroom emails. This feature in Google Classroom, called Guardian Summaries, can provide parents with a weekly description of their child’s work each Friday while we are under the Remote Learning environment. Here are directions for signing up for the Guardian summary emails: 

      • Parents who have an email account on file with the district have had their email addresses added to Google Classroom. An invite email was sent and you can click “Accept” to begin receiving these weekly summaries starting April 24.

      • Parents who do not have an email account on file with the district can contact your school’s instructional technology specialist.

  • 5. How will my child be graded?

    The Illinois State Board of Education provided guidance to all public schools in Illinois regarding grading while under the Remote Learning environment. This guidance is clear that districts must keep in mind that student learning during these unprecedented, difficult times is much different than when students are in the school environment.  However,
    students’ completion of each week’s assignments is essential to effectively continue learning at home.  As a result, the following information applies to District 2’s progress report to be issued Friday, April 17

    • Progress Reports: Available to parents on Friday, April 17, after 12 p.m.

      • The Third Trimester progress report will be posted on the district website on Friday, April 17, after 12 p.m.

      • Given the Remote Learning environment, grades such as ‘Beginning’, ‘Progressing’, ‘Meets’, and ‘Excellent’ will not be provided.  Instead, parents and students will receive narrative feedback comments from their child’s teacher(s) regarding the student’s participation and completion of assignments each week since the start of the online learning environment.

        • Grades Pre-K-2:  Parents will receive their child’s progress report feedback and comments about their overall participation via their child’s grade level App:

          • Tioga:
            • Pre-k through Grade 2:  SeeSaw
            • K-2 Bilingual: RemindMe

          • WAJ:
            • Kindergarten and Grade 1:  Bloomz
            • Grade 2:  RemindMe

        • Grades 3-5: Parents will receive their child’s progress report feedback and comments through the TeacherEase portal. Comments are provided for English Language Arts and Math only.

        • Grades 6-8: Parents will receive their child’s progress report feedback and comments through the TeacherEase portal. Comments are provided for English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Science for Grades 6-8.  In addition, middle school parents will be provided a checklist noting their child’s level of participation: ‘Consistently’, ‘Generally’, and ‘Rarely’.

    • Report Cards:  Information regarding the end-of-year report card will be provided as the district learns more from the State as to when schools might re-open.

  • 6. If my child has a question about an assignment, what can we do?

    Teachers and specialists are available from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. to provide support and answer questions. If you leave a message after these hours, the teachers/specialists will contact you the next day.

  • 7. What are the parameters for make-up work?

  • 8. How are the Remote Learning activities designed?

    Activities and assignments will follow the recommendations from the Illinois State Board of Education’s Guidance for Remote Learning Days outlined below:

    • Pre-K
      • Minimum: 20 minutes a day
      • Maximum: 60 minutes a day
      • Recommended Length of Sustained Attention: 3-5 minutes
    • Kindergarten
      • Minimum: 30 minutes a day
      • Maximum: 90 minutes a day
      • Recommended Length of Sustained Attention: 3-5 minutes
    • Grades 1-2
      • Minimum: 45 minutes a day
      • Maximum: 90 minutes a day
      • Recommended Length of Sustained Attention: 5-10 minutes
    • Grades 3-5
      • Minimum: 60 minutes a day
      • Maximum: 120 minutes a day
      • Recommended Length of Sustained Attention: 10-15 minutes
    • Grades 6-8
      • Minimum: 15 minutes a day for each class, 90 minutes a day total
      • Maximum: 30 minutes a day for each class, 120 minutes a day total
      • Recommended Length of Sustained Attention: 1 subject area or class

  • 9. Are any activities required, or can my child complete whatever he/she would like to complete?

    There are activities that will be identified as required to be completed as well as others from which your child can choose in order to continue learning at home.

  • 10. If my child has special needs or modified curriculum, how does Remote Learning address that?

    The specialist or case manager partners with teaching staff in developing appropriate lessons; they also provide feedback to their students during the Student Support time frames, 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.
