Attendance & Absences

  • It is the responsibility of the parents to call the school before 9 a.m. each day of the student’s absence. The number to call to report a student absence is:

    • Blackhawk – 630-766-2601, voice mail box #4
    • Tioga School – 630-766-2602, voice mail box #2
    • W.A. Johnson School – 630-766-2605, voice mail box #2.

Anyone wishing to speak with a Spanish translator may call the school office. If a call is not received, school personnel will attempt to call a parent/guardian at home or work. School absenteeism should be kept to a minimum. Unreported absences are unexcused and considered truancy. Like all other classes, zero period class requires mandatory attendance.

The following are valid causes for a student’s absences:

    • Illness
    • Observation of a religious holiday
    • Death in the immediate family
    • Family emergency
    • Other situations approved by school administration

After a student has reached 10 or more absences (excused or unexcused), any further absence may require a doctor’s note or administrative approval in order to be considered excused. If there is no doctor’s note presented or administrative approval is not granted, the absence will be marked as unexcused and at that time the family will be referred to the DuPage County Truancy Office for further interventions per section 105, 26-2a of the Illinois School Code.

Only the parent, guardian, or emergency contact listed on the registration form will be permitted to remove a student from the building. No student will be released without the signature (and proof of identity upon request) of the designated adult.

Mental Health Absences

  • Beginning in January 2022, Senate Bill 1577 amended the Illinois School Code to reflect that the mental or behavioral health of a student is a “valid cause” for absence from school.

Therefore, parents/guardians may keep a student from school for up to five mental health absences with no need to provide a medical note. If reported to the school as mental health absences, the absences will be excused, and the student will be able to make up missed schoolwork.

Mental health absences can indicate a student needs additional support at school. If a student takes two or more during the school year, the school will contact their parents/guardians to conduct an emotional wellness check and determine if the student requires additional mental health support at school.
