CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Mask-wearing in schools will continue
Mask-wearing is still the norm in all Illinois schools. Please continue to follow District 2’s current practices. Students and staff should wear masks except during meals and outdoor mask breaks.
Outside of the school environment, practices are changing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) relaxed the mask-wearing recommendations for fully-vaccinated individuals on May 13. (Click here for more info.)
But this change does not apply to schools yet. Schools will continue to follow the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for its implementation of CDC guidance.
We’ll share any new IDPH guidance as soon as it is available. IDPH is actively working on this topic.
In summary, the new CDC rules say that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any non-healthcare setting. But, says the CDC, this change does not overrule other safety practices that might be required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations. Local businesses and workplaces can still have their guidance, too.
